Embracing Your Imperfections

Have your insecurities ever caused you to feel unworthy or being not good enough? Yes, those nagging little things that you see in your life, that most others don’t even notice. It’s funny how we can see all out imperfections and this can sometimes leave our good qualities hidden just out of our view. I think the big problem is that we often compare ourselves to the people we see on social networks such as Instagram and Facebook. And with us comparing ourselves, it affects the way we view ourselves and others. Imperfection is beautiful. What you see as being imperfect and needing to be fixed is in fact part of what makes you you. And learning to accept your imperfections and owning it, makes you standout from others.

Why should we embrace our imperfections?

1. It makes us unique, different to some degree from all others physically and emotionally. How boring would it be if we all were the same as everyone else? I love the uniqueness I see in others – their smiles, kindness, skills, abilities or being remembered as someone with unique trait like the way a he or she laughed or teased or the friendliness she or she invested.

2. It defines your character. It has to do with a person’s actions in response to the events in his life. Meaning, your character is clearly defined by the choices you make and what actions you take when things happen to you, especially during the hard times.

3. They are part of your history and who you are, where you’ve been and what you’ve done. Just like the scars that you have are a proof that you lived; It show the battles you have fought and won and are a sign on strength, not weakness.

4. Perfection is unattainable because I believe, it is an infinite scale. Also trying for it is expensive, time-consuming, and unwarranted.   It often leads to disappointment and it can set you up for failure. Strive for progress, not perfection.

How do we embrace our imperfections?

1. Be grateful with what you have and count your blessings, not your problems. Don’t wait for people or situations to change BEFORE you’re grateful because usually when it’s gone, it’s gone forever. This may sound silly, but sometimes, when I’m sad, I feel my heartbeat and thank God for keeping me alive,  safe and happy.

2. Love yourself enough to believe in the limitless opportunities available to you. Take action and create a beautiful life for yourself.

3. Stop explaining yourself. Sometimes it’s good that we care about what others think of us – it makes us a better person. But you have to remember that most people have so many double standards. Sometimes you got to stop explaining yourself, not everyone comprehends things like you do. They will treat you however they want to without an explanation, but when you do it to them, they will demand an explanation from you.  You don’t owe anyone a thing, unless they are paying your bills. Besides, doing this only proves that you are losing trust in yourself.

4. Get rid of toxic or negative relationships in your life. You know the people I’m talking about, they get you down, are not supportive when you need them and basically continually take much more than they give. Being around negative people will bring you down and negative energy is contagious.  Try to help these people take a positive approach to life and then move on.  You’ll be so glad you did when you realize your life is filled with only positive relationships.

5. Learn to laugh at yourself sometimes. If you are uptight and expect a lot out of yourself, then when you get all mess up, you’re going to be frustrated or disappointed. But, if you know you’re going to make mistakes and can just laugh about them, life will be so much more enjoyable. I’d much rather find humor in my most embarrassing moment than let it get to me and feel stupid. Go easy on yourself. 🙂

It is normal to be imperfect.  But having those insecurities consume you to the point where it makes you want to change who you are to look like someone else that you believe looks better is completely ridiculous. There is no such thing as a ‘perfect’ person, so why not embrace all the imperfections that make you unique? Being able to accept everything for what you are – flaws and all – is beautiful. And I believe, if we could just accept the person we are, inside and out, this world would be so much more beautiful.
